Hostel Experiences
Well, if you are here is because you are curious to know more of the misadventures I had in the hostel while I explored the 55 countries in this place we call home!
To be honest, you won’t really find a lot of them in here since most of them were a true lesson for me when I was backpacking for the first time.
But… still, here you are a few!
#1. You Had The Whole Day For Packing!
There are times when living in a hostel means dealing with people who do not fully understand the rules. Being woken up by someone turning on the light in the middle of the night is definitely one of the most common experiences of hostel nights.
We stayed in a crazy hostel for a week in Ecuador like any other trip. It was a little bit different than last time, as we shared a four-bedroom with a couple of party people. Those are the types you find at the disco at night and sleeping during the day.
Their trip was coming to an end, and like everyone else, they went out partying and came back very late. They must have missed only one small detail between their cocktail and another: their things were still scattered around the room.
After a wild night on the Galapagos, they come back, still drunk and staggering, slamming the door, switching on every light, even the unnecessary ones, and starting packing.
They took forever, whether it was because of my tiredness or their slowness! We were sleeping, dumbumm. Thank you so much, it was a pleasure meeting you.
I would say more than funny extreme this was an annoying and bad hostel experience!
#2. A Concert During The Night! ~ Hostel Experiences
During my stay in Peru with a friend, we shared a room with two brothers.
Due to our disappointment in our city in general, after our first night in the city, we went to bed relatively early.
At some point during the night, our roommates returned, more than a bit tipsy. In spite of one too many beers, their discretion and my tiredness made my sleep almost uninterrupted.
The fact that they had returned almost escaped my notice. It was one of the best last words I’ve ever heard.
In no time, they fell asleep together under the influence of alcohol, her snoring melody, and his perfect imitation of a hibernating bear with a cold. They were in perfect harmony, even the corks couldn’t hinder their wailing.
There was a feeling of tears in my ears. Yes, my ears were weeping. I could look like a panda the next morning, with dark circles all over my face. Although, nowadays it’s more like a fun hostel adventure LOL!
#3. You Can No Haz Cheeseburger, Forget It
Henloo, I’m Sam and I work behind the scenes on this blog doing translations, editing, and some content creation 🙂 Today I’d like to share with you one of my most hostel bizarre experiences!
My friend and I returned at 3 am from a pub crawl in Argentina. As a result of hostel availability, we were going to sleep in separate rooms that night. She was very fortunate.
I went back to my hostel room and quietly went in my bed hostel, which was atop a two-story castle. I found a dumbumm guy sleeping peacefully.
As I awoke him, I told him to please move from my bed. He told me that the others in the room said the bed was free and so he should sleep there. Despite my repeated complaints and requests for him to move his ass, he kept sleeping, turning to the other side.
The noise we were making in the meantime woke up others in the room. In fact, one girl even told me that there was still a free bed, where my thief should have slept. A bunk bed was on three floors and the free bed was on the last floor.
After climbing it and illuminating it, I understood why my friend took mine: it was filthy and stained.
As I retraced my steps, I returned to the guy still sleeping in my bed hostel (oh guy.. too many gyms in the morning) and told him again to move. Nothing, he ignored me by telling me he was leaving by 4 o’clock anyway.
As I walked to the front desk, confused, tired, and already angry, I reported the issue. Their response? “Tell him to move and sort it out on your own.” Thanks, that was helpful.
In the meantime, it was almost four in the morning, and I still hadn’t found a place to sleep. Luckily the hostel had a relaxation room with hammocks. The little lucidity I had left led me to go downstairs and sleep in a hammock, using my jacket and scarf as blankets and pillows.
It didn’t take me long to fall asleep since I was so tired.
At 6:30 a.m., I heard someone slam the door: it was the custodian! When he came by for a tour of inspection, he shook my hammock and kicked me out of the relaxation room because it was “forbidden to sleep there”.
I went back to my room to get my things, sent a message to my friend saying I would wait for her in one of the quieter common rooms, and eventually dozed off on a couch using my NorthFace bag as a pillow.
It is not such a hostel funny experience as I wish for anyone! Damn… what a bad hostel experience.
