Bagan isn’t just another stop on your Southeast Asian checklist. The 2000-odd temples make this a place of deep spiritual significance.

Not only does Bagan have remarkable architecture, but it also has some of the most breathtaking sunsets and as you wander through the ancient city you can’t help but feel the sense of peace and spirituality of this magical place.
From my personal experience, I’ll divinely guiding through why Bagan is such a special, spiritual place and why you should visit, when you travel to Myanmar as well as some useful information and FAQs to help you plan your own trip.
Is Bagan a Spiritual Place?
Although you may not be fully aware when you first arrive, Bagan is indeed a spiritual place. Bagan holds significant spiritual importance due to its huge collection of ancient temples, large pagodas, and stupas.
Travelers often visit Bagan to catch a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the impressive temples or explore them by electric bikes but many don’t realize the scale of the place or the religious significance the city once (and still) has.
There’s plenty of opportunity to wake up for sunrises, watch sunsets, and meditate in peaceful surroundings. All while connecting with centuries of history which contributes to Bagan’s reputation as a spiritual destination.
What is the significance of Bagan?
Bagan is a significant religious destination and immensely important for both Buddhists and travellers alike.
The ancient temples of Bagan and stupas date back to the 9th to 13th centuries when the ancient city served as the capital of the kingdom of Pagan (modern Bagan), demonstrating its historical and cultural significance.
As a unique place of worship, temples are hugely important to followers of Buddism and stupas usually hold a relic of Budhha himself so the fact that Bagan had over 10,000 temples, stupas and pagodas with a 40 square miles area shows the religious significance of the area.
Today only around 2500 temples survive but Bagan continues to attract travellers with these stunning buildings, tranquil landscape, captivating local culture, and friendly burmese people.
What is Bagan known as?
Although it’s not official, Bagan is commonly known as the “Land of a Thousand Temples” due to its numerous ancient Buddhist temples, pagodas and bell-shaped stupa spread across the Bagan archaeological area.
Bagan is also referred to as Pagan – a reference to the old Pagan Kingdom that existed from 1044 to 1284.
Why is Bagan a World Heritage Site?
Due to Bagan’s outstanding extensive and well-preserved collection of Buddhist monuments, the city was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2019.
The temples serve as an exceptional example of a well-preserved collection of Buddhist monuments.
The religious monuments represent the architectural achievements of the Pagan first Kingdom and the region’s significance as a centre of Buddhist worship and burmese culture.
Personal Experience in Bagan
From the moment my partner and I arrived in Bagan, we knew we were going to love our short time there.
While I wouldn’t consider myself to be a spiritual person I could feel the significance of why people would consider Bagan as a spiritual place. Our trip was a mixture of fun and learning.
We spent every early morning getting on the e-bike and heading out to witness the sunrise over the numerous temples of Bagan completely alone, except for the hot air balloons!
We often wandered the impressive temples alone as there were so many of them and loved seeing the different Buddha statues and wall carvings in each temple.
Even though there were tourists around we never felt like it was overly crowded. Everyone seemed to have their own sunrise or sunset spot and this made being alone during those special moments even better.
The people of Myanmar are super friendly, always helpful and we always felt safe (in fact, we always felt safe in Myanmar.)
It was my partner’s birthday and we had a magical hot-air balloon ride before exploring more temples and an excellent meal where the staff brought out a cake, and guitar and sang happy birthday!
Bagan was one the absolute highlights of our tour throughout Southeast Asia and we still talk about going back all the time!

So where is Bagan exactly? Well, it’s in the heart of Myanmar (Burma) and while most people know where Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia are, not many people would know where to pin this Southeast Asian country which borders India, China, Thailand and Laos.
The city of Bagan is located about 600km north of Myanmar’s biggest city, Yangon, and approximately 200km from Mandalay.
Things To Do Bagan
#1. Explore the Temples of Bagan
One of the things that make Myanmar worth visiting is the incredible ancient temples and Bagan has over 2000 of them! Collectively, they make one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world however, many deserve individual attention.
While you’ll never be able to visit all the Bagan temples in your lifetime, there are some that you simply cannot miss.
🛕 SCHWEZIGON PAGODA
Completed in 1102, Shwezigon is one of the oldest temples and is believed to be the burmese temple design from which nearly all pagodas are built! It is believed that the pagoda enshrines a bone and tooth of Gautama Buddha making it one of the most important in modern Myanmar.
🛕 ANANDA PAGODA TEMPLE
With its white exterior, grand corridors and gold leaf Buddha statues, Ananda Temple is believed to be the most beautiful in all of Bagan. The gilded top of the temple is typical of North Indian design which explains the Indian influenced architecture.
🛕 HTILOMINLO TEMPLE
Completed in 1211, Htilominlo Temple is one of the most beautiful and majestic temples in Bagan. At 46 metres tall, it’s easily spotted from the thousands of other temples around.
🛕 SHWESANDAW GOLDEN PAGODA
This stunning white temple has become affectionately known as the Sunset Temple. Constructed in 1057 AD, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, making it a popular spot for sunset. It’s also one of the very select few temples you can climb.
🛕 DHAMMAYANGYI TEMPLE
One of the largest and most imposing religious structures in Bagan, Dhammayangyi Temple is known for its massive size and intricate brickwork. Built in the early 12th century by King Narathu, visitors can explore its maze-like corridors and enjoy the intricate wall carvings.
🛕 THATBYINNYU TEMPLE
Thatbyinnyu Temple is the tallest structure of all of Bagan’s temples. Dating back to the 12th century its towering structure offers panoramic views of the surrounding Bagan plains, making it a popular spot for sunrise and sunset photography.
#2. Hot Air Ballon Ride Over Bagan
The number one thing to do in Bagan if you can afford it. A hot-air balloon ride over the plains as the sun rises over the thousands of ancient temples is surely a bucket list-worthy memory.
A typical flight costs around $350 although there are sometimes offers and discounts. You can upgrade to a premium package and share your basket with fewer passengers.
#3. Experience Sunrise & Sunset Over the temples
Bagan is at its most beautiful at dawn and dusk. The colours and the tranquil atmosphere as you watch the sun rise or fall over the impressive temples are just magical.
Early risers will benefit from having fewer people and more peaceful surroundings whereas sunset can be a little crowded. Sunrise is also the only time the hot-air balloons take off.
#4. Nan Myint Tower
Can’t afford a hot air balloon ride? Then the view from the Nan Myint Tower is probably the next best thing. From the top, you can enjoy views of the surrounding landscape, and all the Bagan temples and pagodas.
#5. Temple Hopping by Bycyle Or Ebike
One of my favourite things to do in Bagan was rent an e-bike and explore the temples of Bagan from sunrise to sunset.
They’re extremely easy to operate and not too fast, these little e-bikes (more like e-scooters) can zip you from one end of the old city to another and it’s super easy to follow the little trails to all the temples.
#6. Nyaung U Market
If you want to buy souvenirs then head to Nyaung U market. The bustling marketplace is where locals and tourists alike meet to experience the vibrant atmosphere and shop for various goods.
From fresh produce to handicrafts and souvenirs, the market offers a glimpse into everyday life in Myanmar.
#7. Take a day trip to Mount Popa
About 60km from Bagan is the dormant volcano of Mount Poppa. Tourists don’t visit the actual volcano itself magma plug where the Buddhist monastery of Taung Kalat is built.
This cool-looking monastery takes 777 steps to climb before reaching the top where you can wander the complex and enjoy the views across the countryside. Just be careful of the monkeys!
Best Time to Visit Bagan Myanmar
The best time to visit Bagan is November to February with temperatures ranging from ‘cool’ 25C to 30C and minimal to no rainfall.
As with much of Southeast Asia, Myanmar experiences wet and dry seasons with the monsoons being from May to September and dry from October to April.
In October the rainy days start to get less going into the dry season and the temperature becomes bearable again going into the dry season. The temperature and humidity start to rise again from March/April to mark the change in seasons.
How to Get to Bagan?
You can easily reach Bagan by flight, train, bus or taxi.
The easiest way to get to Bagan is by air. Flights leave from Yangon and arrive at Nyaung U Airport, 3km from the main area of Bagan.
Another popular option is the overnight bus. This is a great budget option as you save on a night’s accommodation and it is very cheap. Try to book yourself onto a VIP sleeper as you may end up on an uncomfortable for 9-10 hours. They may also stop for food in the middle of the night!
A less popular option is by car. Hiring a car in Myanmar is not very common but a car and driver can easily be found but both of these are not the cheapest way to reach Bagan.
For the price of car hire with or without a driver, and the same with a taxi, you may as well take a flight.
Bagan Restaurants Penang
🍴 THE MOON VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT
The Moon Vegetarian Restaurant offers a delightful culinary experience for vegetarians and vegans visiting the large area. The menu features traditional Burmese dishes made exclusively with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
🍴 WEATHER SPOON’S RESTAURANT
For those visiting from the UK, Weather Spoon’s Restaurant will take you back home. Although this restaurant is not part of the popular chain, they do provide excellent Western food and amazing cocktails.
🍴 NANDA RESTAURANT
If you want to experience a traditional puppet show then you need to have a night at Nanda restaurant. The food is good but the main attraction is the nightly puppet shows which is a great combination for a great evening in Bagan.
🍴 LA TERRAZZA
Those looking for some good Italian food should visit La Terrazza. There’s not much in the way of pizzas and pasta in Bagan but this restaurant swill definitely hit the spot.
Where to Stay in Bagan?
There are three main areas where you can stay in Bagan – New Bagan, Old Bagan and Nyaung-U. Most visitors tend to stay in Nyaung-U or Old Bagan to be closer to the temples although you’re never really that far away from one!
With that in mind, here are some of the best hotels to stay in Bagan.
#A. Budget Option – A Little Bit of BAGAN HOTEL
This is a great little Bagan hostel Myanmar for those on a budget. Only 1.4km from Shwezigon Pagoda, this 3-star hotel has a restaurant and on-site and all rooms have a kettle for tea and coffee.
#B. Midrange Option – The Hotel Umbra Bagan
Located between Old Bagan and the ancient city Nyaung U, the Hotel Umbra is close to all the major archaeological sites and impressive temples. There 2 pools and even a spa to help you relax after a long day of exploring.
#C. Luxury Option – The Hotel @ Tharabar Gate
There aren’t a lot of luxury options in Bagan but this one is definitely up there. The wooden decor and furniture really at to the ambience and there is a beautiful pool and garden area as well as a spa and wellness centre.
FAQs Bagan Trip
Now that I’ve gone through why you should visit Bagan, let’s go through some FAQs to fully cover the subject.
Old Bagan Or New Bagan
Old Bagan is near the heart of all the action whereas New Bagan is further out.
Many tour groups stay in New Bagan as there are more accommodation options and better transport links.
A more authentic stay can be had at Old Bagan or even towards Nyaung U.
Bagan Balloon Price
The average price of a hot air balloon ride in Bagan is $350-$399 depending on the company and basket capacity.
There are usually some deals to be had and STT Balloongin currently have flights for $165
Bagan Dress Code
Modest clothing is recommended when visiting temples, pagodas, and other religious sites in Bagan. This includes covering your shoulders and knees.
Lightweight and breathable fabrics are recommended due to the hot and humid climate in Bagan. Light-colored clothing is also advised to help keep you cool.
Comfortable and sturdy footwear is essential for exploring the ancient ruins of Bagan. Sandals or flip flops may not be suitable as they can easily get dirty or damaged.

Bagan Altitude
The average altitude of Bagan is around 165 meters above sea level. This makes it a relatively low-lying area compared to other popular tourist destinations in Myanmar such as Mandalay and Yangon.
Despite its lower altitude, Bagan offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, especially during sunrise and sunset.
