In January 2023, I moved to Morocco and visited the city of Fez after a 3-day desert tour from Marrakech. After days of sandboarding and camel rides, I arrived in Fez feeling and inspired.
The city turned out to be the perfect retreat for relaxation, meditation, and rediscovery.

Fez is often referred to as the “spiritual heart of Morocco.” It is an ancient city located in the northern part of the country.
The city is situated approximately four hours from the mountain city of Chefchaouen, making it an ideal stop for travelers exploring northern Morocco.
Fez is divided into two main areas: the ancient Medina, known as Fes el-Bali, and the newer section called Fes el-Jdid.
The Medina of Fez boasts one of the world’s oldest universities, the University of Al Quaraouiyine, founded in 859 AD.
While New Fez, or Fes el-Jdid, was established in the 13th century and is considered the “newer” part of the city. It still contains centuries-old landmarks, including royal palaces and Jewish quarters known as Mellahs.

Founded in 789 AD, Fez is an ancient city. It is home to numerous mosques, like the Great Mosque of Fez el-Jdid, that invites Muslims to come, pray, and sit in quiet meditation.
Many pilgrims come to Fez to visit the Zaouia Moulay Idriss II, a beautiful shrine dedicated to the founder of the city. But many of these historical sites are not open to non-Muslims.
During your visit, you can admire the stunning Islamic architecture before heading to the top of a nearby hill and watching the sunset over the old medina of Fes.
You can sit among the ruins, meditate, and enjoy the grandeur of the Merenid Tombs high above the city.
It’s a beautiful place to sit in quiet contemplation and connect with the world around you. These ancient ruins were tombs originally built throughout the 13th and 15th centuries as part of a royal necropolis for the Marinid idrisid dynasty.
Another reason why Fez is so spiritual is that it is home to many hamams, or public baths where people sit in steam rooms of varying temperatures and then scrub all of the dead skin off of their bodies with black soap.

There are a lot of amazing things to do in Fez.
Below I have mentioned must-visit attractions and experiences that make Fez a destination to remember:
1. Experience the Chouara Tannery
A visit to the Chouara Tannery is a must when in Fez. This site shows the traditional leather dyeing process that has been in practice for centuries.
The best way to enjoy this experience is to hire a local guide who can take you to a rooftop for an aerial view.
They’ll also provide mint leaves to mask the strong smell and share insights into the history and significance of this ancient craft.
2. Marvel at Bab Bou Jeloud
Bab Bou Jeloud, also known as The Blue Gate, is the entrance to the Medina of Fez. Its intricate blue and green mosaic tiles are a stunning example of Moroccan craftsmanship.
Take time to admire the gate’s beauty, explore the bustling streets beyond, and deepens yourself in the vibrant energy of the Medina.
3. Relax at Jnan Sbil Gardens
Step outside the Medina and enjoy the beauty of Jnan Sbil Gardens. This oasis features a small lake, shaded paths, and beautiful greenery.
It’s an ideal spot for a leisurely walk, a moment of relaxation, or a picnic. On your way to Jnan Sbil, stop by the Royal Palace to admire its architecture.
While you cannot enter, the intricately designed golden gates and surrounding structures are worth seeing and photographing.

End your day with a trip to the Marinid Tombs. It is perched on a hill overlooking the city.
The beautiful views of Fez at sunset are excellent. It offeres a perfect moment of reflection.

Keep in mind that it’s a 4-hour drive each way, so plan accordingly for a full-day adventure.
How to Get to Fez?
Fez is a very well-connected city and have a fast means of transportation to visit all the landmarks of Fez. Therefore, you can easily take a train, bus, or plane to other major cities like Casablanca, Tangier, Marrakech, and Rabat.
Old Fez even has an international airport. So, you can easily fly in and out of the city domestically and internationally. However, domestic flights are expensive and I would not recommend flying around the country unless you are short on time.
Instead, take the train to and from other cities since it is generally faster than the bus.
However, do know that Fez is a bit far from everything. So, it is about a 4-hour bus ride away from Chefchaouen, the closest city. And if you ask how far is Fez from Marrakech, it’s about a 7-hour train ride away.
You could also rent a car but many road signs are not in English, which makes driving difficult. The Medina in Fez is also small, and easily explored on foot. So, a rental car isn’t necessary in the city.
The only time you might need a car is to visit the New Town. But, that part of the city can be accessed via a petite taxi (private taxi), Grand Taxi (shared taxi), or a local bus.
What is the Best Time to Visit the Fez?
The best time to visit Fez is in October and November when the weather is mild and there are fewer tourists in the city. Spring is another great time to go to Fez for the same reasons. However, it will be Ramadan in March and April this year, which can affect your travel plans.
Summer is not an ideal time to visit Fez since the old city is hot and packed with tourists. However, winter can be a good time to visit if you don’t mind the cold.
Just make sure your riad has adequate heating if you are visiting at this time of year.

For an affordable but delicious meal, try visiting Cafe Clock in the Medina. They have an amazing rooftop with fun, modern Moroccan decor.
If you are confused about what to eat in this Fez restaurant. Then order the delicious items like a camel burger or a Berber Omelet.
2. Fez & Friends
Another great place to dine is Fez & Friends. It sits just outside the Medina of Fez and has a wide array of Western and non-Western dishes.
So, you can order a falafel bowl or try an amazing lamb tagine. The staff are also very friendly and the space is well appointed.
3. Restaurant Tresor Fes
Lastly, stop by Restaurant Tresor Fes for some authentic Moroccan cuisine. The eatery sits on the roof of a local guesthouse and has a lovely fireplace to help keep you warm in the evening.
The menu isn’t vast but they do serve traditional Moroccan soups like Harira and authentic Moroccan tagines that are out of this world.

1. Riad Verus
If you are on a budget, try staying at Riad Verus. It is well-located and has an amazing rooftop terrace where you can relax after a long day of sightseeing.
Rooms are clean, the staff are friendly, and communal dinners are on offer in the evening. There are also many communal spaces where you can easily meet other people.
2. Riad Lalla Fatima
For a mid-range experience, stay at Riad Lalla Fatima. Rooms are well-appointed with traditional decor and sit inside religious buildings that you will love exploring.
Breakfast is also delightful and staff, like Aziza, are very accommodating and happy to help you with anything you need.
3. Riad Fes – Relais & Chateaux
For a luxurious stay in Fez, book a room at Riad Fes – Relais & Châteaux. It’s an opulent, 5-star hotel with stunning Moorish-style decor and an impressive outdoor pool.
Visitors can even enjoy a meal at a high-end restaurant, relax on the rooftop terrace, or book a treatment at the amazing, on-site spa.
My Unique Experiences in Fez
I have visited old Fez multiple times, both as a solo traveler and as part of a couple. I much preferred Fez when part of a couple since I received no unwanted male attention.
If you are a solo female traveler, I encourage you to explore the old city as part of a group tour or to make friends, preferably male friends, at a local hostel. This way you can explore the city without getting bombarded with unwanted male attention.
I also encourage you to spend a limited amount of time in Fez. Yes, the city is big but the Medina of Fez is small and where most of the main attractions are. So, you can easily explore this part of the city in a day.
Plus, many of the city’s most iconic landmarks are not open to non-Mulsims.
While the spiritual journey through Fez is profound, many travelers also take up a journey to the Sahara Desert, where the vast landscape encourages a deeper connection to the self.

How to Survive in Fez Medina?
The Fez Medina is much easier to navigate than the Marrakech Medina. All you have to do if you get lost is head up the hill and you will eventually make your way out of the medieval Medina.
You can also go downhill if you want to make your way to the river and the Chouara Tannery.
I stayed at a riad along the perimeter of the Medina, at the top of the hill. This location made it much easier to return my accommodation after a long day of exploring.
Fez vs Marrakech
If you can only visit either Fez or Marrakech then visit Marrakech if you prefer a bigger city that is home to a lot more things to do. Marrakech is also much more centrally located, so you can enjoy doing several amazing day trips.
In contrast, Fez is a bit quieter, smaller, and less visited by tourists. So, you can enjoy a richer, less touristy experience and catch a glimpse of authentic, heart of Moroccan culture.
The Medina of Fez is also a bit easier to navigate, top attractions are centrally located in the city, and street vendors are a bit less aggressive than in Marrakech.
So, visit old Fez if you like small cities and enjoy a more non-touristy trip.
