Another reason is that the glaciers melt in summer, which drives some river of ice into the carved valleys. The flow of rivers shapes the surrounding landscape, allowing it to also deliver nutrients into the surrounding lakes, rivers, and oceans.

It is good to know that it is a symbol of strength and courage, while also a symbol of hope and resilience, so I found the journey hiking to the summit of the glacier is just that. It is also a reminder of the power and strength of mother nature.
Therefore, the glacier is a reminder of the importance of protecting the environment and preserving the planet for future generations.
However, I can see why it is set to have such a mystical power and found their stories to be interesting. This is why hiking with a tour guide come in handy, as they can tell you all about the folklore and mysticism related to the mountain along the way.
I took the Snæfellsjökull summit hike with my brother, which was one of the most challenging and best experience at the same time.
It took us around 6 to 7 hours to reach the top, but it was totally worth it as it gave us a glimpse of how beautiful Snaefellsnes National Park with breathtaking view of Reykjanes Peninsula and west Fjords.
You would need another 1 hour to reach to the glaciers apart from being in the summit.
It is a full day tour, which takes around 12 hours from start to finish. It is a moderate to challenging hike, so it is important to dress properly and bring your hiking essentials for a long day hike.
Things to Do in Snæfellsjökull National Park:
Hiking to the summit of Snæfellsjökull glacier is not the only things to do in Snæfellsjökull National Park. There are waterfalls, caves, lava fields, and other mountains awaiting to be explored.
A good example is the Vatnshellir Cave that extends underground for about 35 meter down. This 8000 years old lava cave is an epitome of Iceland natural wonders. It was formed by volcanic eruption in the Pukholar crater area.
As the lava get in contact with the fresh air, it turned into a rock, which formed the cave.
Seal beach is another amazing place to visit in the national park. It is a good place to enjoy the sun while watching seals at their natural habitats.
There are two species of seal that you can find: Harbor Seals and Grays seals. You can enjoy some beach activities, such as snorkeling, birdwatching, and wildlife photography to capture some other marine life in the area.
Not to forget the Kirkjufell Mountain and Kirkjufellsfoss waterfalls. The waterfalls overlook the mountain. Therefore, you can capture them both in a picture. This area is known to be one of the most photographed places in Iceland.
The whole hike is easy and only takes around 20 minutes until you can see how majestic and thunderous this waterfall can be.
The Bjarnarfoss waterfall is worth visiting. It is a 262 foot aka 80 meter waterfalls, which is located in the southern part of the Snaefellsness Peninsula. It is surrounded by mountains and picturesque valley, making it a good spot for photos.
The Snæfellsjökull National Park is home to krill and herring, which are a feeding ground for whales and dolphins. Many whales and dolphins migrate to the national park around April to late September, making it the peak whale watching season.
It is also their feeding ground, as they might be hungry after a long day migrating from other areas.
The Best Time to Visit Iceland
The best time to visit Iceland, specifically Snæfellsjökull National Park, depends on what you want to see and do. As we already mentioned, if you want to see whales and dolphins, you should visit during April to late September.
However, you can visit the national park at anytime of the year to enjoy the abundant activities that it has to offer.
The summer months give you a long days sunlight and milder temperature, while the winter months offer softer light and frozen landscapes. Therefore, in summer you can enjoy some hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding while in winter, you can enjoy ice skiing, snowboarding, and much more.
How to Get from Reykjavík to Snæfellsjökull National Park
You can rent a car to reach to Snæfellsjökull national park to Reykjavík. It is approximately 120 kilometers northwest of Reykjavík, which is around 200 km by the road.
The whole trip takes around 2 hours and 50 minutes, depends on your stops and desired destination within the national park. The route is easy to remember and there are some sign that direct you to the national park.
You can drive along Route 1, which known as Ring Road, until you reach the Snæfellsjökull Peninsula. After that, take the exit to Route 54 and drive straight until you reach the national park.
I would recommend driving to the Snæfellsjökull Visitor Centre, as it has information about the national park and what to do there. You can see your options and decide what you want to do there.
The easiest option is booking this tour with hotel’s pick-up, so you would not worry about transportation.
Another option is taking a flight to Reykjavík Keflavik Nas Airport (KEF) in Iceland, and then taking a bus ride from there. For starter, you can take Reykjavík BSI Bus Terminal to BSI, and then take Borgarnes to Vatnaleio.
Finally, you can take a taxi from Batnaleio to the national park, as there are no buses to get there. The whole trip can be cheaper, but a lot of hustle. It takes around 6 hours and 42 minutes.
I would recommend renting a taxi Reykjavík Keflavik Nas Airport (KEF) to the national park, so you can save times.
Best Snæfellsjökull Hotels in Iceland
For a luxurious stay without breaking the bank, you should stay in Hotel Snaefellsnes. They have double and triple rooms. The double room is enough for two people and costs 153.85 Euro, which is 166.7 dollars. The triple room is enough for 3 people and cost 209.95 Euro, which is 226.61 dollars.
If you want to find cheaper accommodation in Snæfellsjökull National Park, then look no further than Kirkjufell Guesthouse And Apartments. The twin beds room costs around 101.45 dollars, while the double room costs 109.97 dollars.
If you want to save some money, you should stay in a shared room. The Freezer Hostel, Apartments and Culture Centre should do the trick. The accommodation cost 52.45 dollars, and you would be sharing a room with other travelers. It is a good place to hang out and make some friends.
You can also pay 10 to 15 dollars and camp in Snæfellsjökull National Park.
There are many campgrounds in the park, but Arnarstapi Snaefellsnes seems to be the best because it is located at the low foot of Mt. Stapafell, where you can hike and enjoy the panoramic view of the surrounding forest and Snaefellsnes peninsula.
